HDR Shots for Property Owner's Portfolio

I was recently hired to take some shots of the interior and exterior of 6 medical office buildings around Nashville.  This is sort of an unusual type of shoot for me but I really enjoyed it! That is, all except for the getting up super early to get buildings before cars showed up. I used the HDR process in the examples below.

HDR or High Dynamic Ratio is a process that works especially well with buildings. To get an HDR image, you need to use a tripod and take multiple photos while bracketing to get different exposures.  I set the shutter speed and aperture and change the ISO to get a perfect exposure and then overexpose a shot and then underexpose a shot.  Then you layer the 3 shots using a script in Photoshop or any number of plug-ins such as Photomatix.  They usually come out sort of smoky looking so it helps to raise the contrast afterwards and then you get images that look like the examples below.  You can vary a number of settings to control how cartoonish the images come out.

I've tried this with portraits and it usually makes people look bruised or dead but if you are willing to spend the time in Photoshop, you can make a background look like this and then cut the person out of the shot with the best exposure and lay them over the HDR image so the background looks cool and the subject doesn't look like they were boxing before the shoot.  That is always something fun to try to mix things up a little and give your clients a little variety!

Heart and Soul * A Benefit for the American Heart Association

Nashville's 6th annual Heart & Soul benefit for the American Heart Association at Worthan Lofts this weekend was a reschedule due to the snow a few weeks back.  I'm so glad they were able to reschedule to a date that I was available b/c I had a blast.  I'll be back next year and I'm bringing friends!!

I set up a photo booth with my ring light in the basement of the VIP loft to take party pictures while the band performed above me.

The images are available and free for download at the following Flickr share site:

Enjoy!

That is Kate above in the red dress.  I'll be photographing her wedding on May 1st in Birmingham, Alabama.  It will be Party Booth II at the reception.  I can't wait.  Kate was a big part of the team who organized the benefit and she tells me it was a great success!

Joe & Dana Engagement

Dana met up with me at Legend's in Columbia so that I could follow her out to Joe's farm in Lynnville, TN where we planned to shoot their engagement portraits. The farm was amazing with beautiful fields, old barns, and a cabin that sat in the back with an amazing view over Lynnville. I was really excited about the rocking chair silhouette shots that we took but there were lots of great non-silhouette shots with that great view! Before we called it a day we also drove into town for some variety. I loved Lynnville's square! What a great place for photography. I'm definitely hoping to make it back for some more photos sometime soon. Congratulations to Joe and Dana.... we are going to get some beautiful wedding photos next May 15th!

Greta & John - Cathedral Wedding with a Reception at the Standard at the Smith House

John and Greta were married Saturday, September 13, 2008 at the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Nashville. The weather was perfect and after the ceremony, the wedding party hopped on a trolley and headed to the park for an outdoor photo shoot. The reception was my first opportunity to photograph at the Standard. It was a photographer's dream. Amazing window light, white ceilings in the dance hall for bouncing light, plenty of room, and a balcony where I could sit down and shoot great dance floor candids without being noticed. Plus, they had a great live band that kept the party on the dancefloor 'til we were ushered out to see the happy couple off.

Best Wishes to Greta and John - I hope you love your photos!

May 30 Frist Friday - Featuring Tony Joe White

The last Friday of each month from May through October, the Frist Center puts on a great big party with food, drinks, and great music. This past Friday, May 30th, the musical guest was Tony Joe White whose blues sound made me want to strut around as I photographed party goers.

I hope the Frist is pleased with the job I did b/c I am dying to be asked to photograph The Dynamites when they perform this Halloween for the final Frist Friday of the season! A Halloween party at the Frist Center with the Dynamites will be a lot of fun to photograph!

This is one of two weddings that I photographed last Memorial Day weekend. The groom, Eric Walberg, is an old friend of mine so I had really been looking forward to being a part of this wedding. The Gettysview Country club provided me with a golf cart to carry my lights around in and I had free reign to shoot wherever I chose on the course. It was a beautiful course on a beautiful Saturday. Just spending the day there has stoked me up to get out my clubs.

I'm so happy for Eric. He is a great guitar player, a great friend and an all around great guy... and he found a great girl to make music with!!!

Cheers,
-Matt

Rachel & Lou at Belle Meade Plantation in Nashville on May 25, 2008

These are photos from one of two Memorial Day weekend weddings that I shot. It has to be one of the busiest wedding weekends of the year. Rachel and Lou were married at Belle Meade Mansion. It was a hot but it was also a very beautiful ceremony. The whole wedding party was really into doing fun photographs which makes it a lot more fun for me! There were so many great photos from this wedding. If you are interested in seeing more, go to my proofing site at www.printroom.com/pro/mattandrews.
